Using Tallow Balm for Healthy Skin

At first glance, you may wonder why in the world we’d ever suggest smearing animal fat all over your face as part of a beauty care regiment. However, upon looking further into tallow-based skin care, you’ll see that there really isn’t a better choice when it comes to nurturing healthy, supple skin and getting back your youthful glow. Tallow is the rendered fat from cattle and has been used for centuries by our ancestors in a nose-to-tail fashion for things like skin balm, medicinal ointments, soaps, natural sunscreen and other healing aides. Only in the last hundred years or so did we stray away from using time-tested ingredients of the earth and steer more toward synthetic chemicals and man-made toxins to get the job done.

The Benefits of Grass-Fed Tallow

Tallow is amazing for many reasons, but our favorite is that it’s lipid profile matches extremely well with human skin. Essentially, this means that the fats in tallow are similar to the fats that make up human skin and sebum, the oily, waxy substance secreted by our skin cells to help protect it. The cells in a human body are made up mostly of fats, so without them, are cells become dehydrated in a way. Providing skin with external sources of healthy fats is one way to help combat issues like dry skin, aging, discoloration and other signs of cell damage.

Today, we want to point out a few of the star nutrients contained in quality, grass-fed tallow, like the kind we use in our Tallow Beauty Balm.

CLA – Conjugated Linoleic Acid

CLA is a fatty acid known for its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial benefits. Unlike antibiotic ointments however, CLA has the ability to distinguish between pathogenic and beneficial bacteria leaving your skin-bacterial balance in tact! Much of the damage you see on your skin also comes from free radical and inflammation, both external and internal. CLA has unique anti-inflammatory properties that help reverse this damage and repair and restore tired, lackluster skin.

 Vitamins A, D, E and K

These fat-soluble vitamins all have incredible benefits for skin health and only occur together like this in animal products. These vitamins are important because they can only be absorbed and utilized by the body in the presence of fat, which is why you won’t find them in usable forms in plants and plant products. Mother Nature is pretty amazing, eh? Each of them plays a role in the suppleness and flexibility of our skin cells, leading to that youthful, radiant texture we all crave.

Essential Fatty Acids

If you’ve ever heard of Omega-3s and 6s, you’re familiar with essential fatty acids. Our body requires them in balanced amounts, but usually we end up getting way more omega-6 than 3 which can cause inflammation in the body. Grass-fed tallow is a perfect blend of both fats which contributes to an anti-inflammatory effect and leaves skin feeling smooth and plump.

The Main Reason We Love Tallow

While we’ve covered lots of the nourishing nutrients that make up grass-fed tallow, our favorite reason to use it is actually less scientific. Tallow is 100% safe for every person, every where. It doesn’t contain any harmful or hormone-disrupting chemicals (obviously) and for that reason it passes our seal of approval without a doubt. There’s no better feeling than peace of mind when it comes to what goes on your body, and with tallow-based products, you know you’re getting safe, non-toxic ingredients every time. In fact, our products at Amara Marie are so safe you could eat them – although we don’t recommend it – we tried and they don’t exactly taste as good as they smell!
