The Benefits of Activated Charcoal for Skincare
Activated charcoal has recently become the ultimate green beauty ingredient and for good reason. Charcoal has an unparalleled ability to bind to impurities and unwanted toxins, making it the ideal addition to your natural skincare routine.
What is Activated Charcoal
Getting to the down and dirty of it (pun intended), activated charcoal is made from substances like wood, bamboo or coconut shell, which have been treated at a high heat. By treating these substances at a high temperature, the compounds become extremely porous at the cellular level, which increase charcoal’s absorptive capability in attracting unwanted substances. No it’s not black magic, it’s the beauty of Mother Nature!
Benefits of Activated Charcoal for Your Skin
Outside of it’s gorgeous color and gentle exfoliating properties, activated charcoal has the ability to pull toxins and other contaminants from the skin and rinse them down the drain, making it a skincare powerhouse. Listed below are some of the benefits of using external activated charcoal within your skincare routine.
Found in Mother Nature, activated charcoal is all natural, so you don’t have to worry about adding any hormone disrupting chemicals to your skin.
Using activated charcoal for topical application can quell inflammation and soothe irritation, revealing healthy, radiant, beautiful skin.
Acting like a magnet, activated charcoal pulls out impurities from the skin’s pores removing unwanted substances like dirt, oil, toxins and other skin-disruptors.
Activated charcoal provides a deep, detoxifying cleanse that can draw out bacteria which contribute to acne, breakouts and blackheads.
The smooth, yet natural slightly gritty texture of activated charcoal gently exfoliates skin leaving behind a fresh face.
Using activated charcoal can shrink the skin’s pores. A build up of oil and dirt on the skin’s surface make pores appear larger, so by using activated charcoal in our skincare routine, we can essentially shrink and clear our pores simultaneously. Talk about a win-win.
At Amara Marie, our activated charcoal bar is packed full of nourishing, soothing fats, including AHA-rich milk from pasture-raised goats to hydrate and nourish skin while delivering a gentle, deep clean. Lightly scented with soothing essential oils like cypress, juniper and peppermint, our activated charcoal bar is safe to use on both the face and body and leaves skin feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.
Using Activated Charcoal
As much as we love charcoal, we do have a word of caution: Activated charcoal can’t determine which elements in the skin are good or bad. This means it binds to everything, including the good stuff like vitamins and minerals, which is why it’s important to use it sparingly. We recommend using it no more than 1-3 times a week in conjunction with our classic, handcrafted goat’s milk soap, which can be used as a gentle, everyday cleanser. It’s also important to combine the use of activated charcoal with replenishing products such as our soothing facial beauty balm. Note: If you are prone to dry skin, we recommend easing into your use of activated charcoal to avoid excess dryness which could potentially cause a rebound production of oils.
It’s clear why activated charcoal has earned a spot in natural skincare. Its deep cleaning properties, coupled with its exfoliating but gentle texture, make activated charcoal a must-have for any skincare routine.
